  1. "Hookworm, hookworm, hookworm" song in background is great!

Here is a link to a quick description on this guy's work-- and, yes you can buy his hookworms online... any takers?

  2. Did anyone catch This American Life this weekend? It was entitled “Enemy Camp”. Act two was an interview with Carl Zimmer, I presume the same as the author of one of our readings from a few weeks back. Instead of invasives, the focus was on parasites, with some nice lay person descriptions of some parasites’ life histories, including the isopod that inserts itself in place of fish tongues! Also, an interesting perspective on the anthropomorphizations of parasites and predators, that we humans see name our sports teams after lions, and have little problem with them killing other critters, but we find most parasites and their ways of making a living repulsive.

Act three of the show is a rebroadcast of the bit from Radiolab referenced above. At the end, they say that the individual who was selling his hookworms came under investigation by the FDA and has since fled the country, and is not shipping his hookworms to the U.S of A. for the time being. Sorry to break the bad news if you were hoping to get yourself some of these hookworms – guess you’ll have to go to Africa and walk through the outhouses yourself.

Below is a link to the episode on This American Life’s website. Don’t know how stable it is, but I think you can listen to the episode from it for the time being.
